Description of Classes
- Hr. Contractor Supervisor Course:
Cal/OSHA require this five day (40 hour) course for anyone supervising activities involving the removal of asbestos which is not maintenance related or involves more than one standard-sized glove-bag or waste bag. This course is of benefit to anyone who must respond to asbestos problems, including staff of schools, hospitals, military and industry. The class consists of classroom and hands-on instruction. It meets all training requirements for contractor/supervisor under the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act's (AHERA) Revised Model Accreditation Plan (RMAP), which applies to work performed in schools, public and commercial buildings. It also meets the training requirements for supervisors/competent persons overseeing all classes of work as defined by the State of California. Students cover topics related to the history and use of asbestos, health effects, medical surveillance, protective equipment, sampling, liability, insurance, abatement methods, safety and regulations.
- 32 Hr. Initial Worker Course:
Cal/ OSHA require this four day (32 hour) course for persons performing activities involving the removal of asbestos if the work is not maintenance related or involves more than one standard-sized glove-bag or waste bag. The course consists of classroom and hands-on instruction. It meets all training requirements for workers under the federal Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act's (AHERA) Revised Model Accreditation Plan (RMAP), which applies to work performed in schools, public and commercial buildings. Students learn how to perform a variety of asbestos abatement activities. Additionally, the course covers the history of asbestos, health effects and medical surveillance, respiratory protection, personal protective equipment, work practices, safety and federal and state regulations governing the asbestos industry.
- 8 Hr.Asbestos Worker Refresher:
This one day course meets the AHERA annual refresher training requirements for asbestos workers. The course covers topics required by Cal/OSHA including a review of regulations and description of regulatory changes, review of the basic course material from the initial training for workers and any other new information that will be of benefit to the worker. Students must bring a copy of their most recent certification before a refresher certificate can be issued.
- Asbestos Operations & Maintenance Refresher:
This one-day course meets OSHA annual refresher training requirements for asbestos maintenance workers (Class III work). Course topics include a review of regulations, initial course material and any other new information that is related to this type of work
- Asbestos Awareness Training:
The Asbestos Abatement Training Facility provides OSHA compliant Class III and IV asbestos training for building maintenance, construction and management personnel. This two-hour class meets OSHA requirements for Class IV work. It is designed for persons who may come into contact with but do not disturb asbestos containing or presumed asbestos containing materials. It is required by OSHA for any worker who performs custodial or maintenance activities under the above conditions, but is also of value for realtors, building owners and property managers regarding notification and disclosure requirements of asbestos-containing materials in buildings
- Asbestos Training Class IV OSHA and AHERA Awareness (4-hour course):
Attendees will learn how to identify suspect asbestos-containing materials, respond to asbestos emergencies, recognize asbestos hazards, and prevent exposure to themselves and building occupants.
The class satisfies the AHERA and OSHA Class IV requirements for training employees who are likely to come into contact with, but do not disturb asbestos containing materials.
Who Should Attend: Construction, building maintenance and janitorial personnel who work in commercial buildings and schools and who may come into contact with asbestos-containing materials.
- Asbestos Training Class III OSHA Operations and Maintenance (8-hour course):
This class is for maintenance and contractor personnel who may disturb small amounts of asbestos containing materials as part of performing routine maintenance activities. Class IV course information as outlined above is covered, as well as how to clean up asbestos spills, repair damaged asbestos-containing materials and perform contractor work in areas with friable asbestos-containing materials. Attendees are also trained in the proper use of respirators, protective clothing, HEPA vacuums and repair procedures.
The class satisfies the OSHA Class III requirements for employees who disturb or cleanup asbestos containing materials or work in regulated areas during asbestos maintenance/construction projects.
Who Should Attend: Construction and building maintenance personnel who clean up small asbestos spills and perform repair activities on or near building systems with ACM.
- Asbestos Training Class III OSHA Operations and Maintenance Supervisor (16-hour course):
This two –day comprehensive asbestos training course includes all information of the Class III 8-hour course, as well as personnel air monitoring procedures, fit-testing protocols, setting up mini-enclosures and regulated areas, and personal decontamination procedures. Attendees receive hands-on training in spot removal of fireproofing and acoustic ceiling materials, as well as glove-bag removal of pipe insulation.
Who Should Attend: Asbestos program supervisors and building maintenance personnel who supervise and/or perform responses to small spills or perform small-scale repair activities on building systems with ACM
- Mold: Mold (Bio aerosols)
The presence of molds in indoor environments and the potential negative health consequences has many homeowners and parents concerned. The US EPA has made recommendations regarding the safe control and mitigation of these nuisances.
- Mold Awareness:
This one day class is designed for individuals with experience in abatement (asbestos or lead). Students are introduced to the variety of molds (fungi) commonly found in buildings, the health effects of exposure, how to protect themselves from the molds. Also covered are abatement technologies and an introduction in sampling for molds.
- Mold Remediation - Operations and Maintenance:
This two day class includes the Mold Awareness and students have the opportunity to performs hands-on activities. This course is ideal for renovation and remodeling companies without asbestos or lead experience.
- Other Health and Safety Courses:
If you have other training needs, the Joint Apprenticeship & Asbestos Abatement Training Facility can provide training in other health and safety areas. We can design classes to meet your specific training and scheduling needs. Courses could be one hour to several days in length. Examples include, but are not limited to, Basic Safety, Confined Space Operations, Electrical Safety, Fire Safety, Hazard Communication, Blood borne Pathogens, Power Tool Safety, Vision Protection, Scissor Boom, Rough Terrain/Boom Lift Awareness, Fall Protection, Emergency Response Prepare, CPR/AED and First Aid, etc.
